Positive and Professional Dog Training
At Ruff Day Pet Resort, we’re passionate about the important, unique bond between dogs and their owners. We believe the key to the best relationship with your dog is through clear, positive training—and we’re honored to be part of that for so many families. In fact, our business was first created to help dogs of all breeds and ages learn to be even better family members through customized dog and puppy training.
About Our Owner
Our owner, Amy Holtz, is a longtime animal lover and dog trainer. She opened her dog training business in 2008—and four years later it became Ruff Day Pet Resort. Amy has trained dogs of all breeds and ages and helped them overcome a wide range of challenges. In addition to pet-level dog and puppy training, Amy expertly trains canine athletes, show dogs, therapy dogs, and more. Amy is certified for AKC testing as well as RocDog therapy dog instruction. With a deep understanding of canine thinking and motivation, Amy has hand-selected our training team. Each of our experienced trainers approaches every dog like the individual they are to bring out their best.
Our Dog Training Philosophy
First and foremost, we believe training should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for your dog and your family. We provide all the tools and information you need to understand what naturally drives your pet, tapping into their way of thinking. This opens up clear communication between human and dog so you can make your expectations known and get the desired response from your dog on the first cue, every time.
There are 3 main components of every Ruff Day Pet Resort training program:
- Teach your dog the important obedience and manners skills they need to be their best self
- Show your family how to maintain your dog’s good behaviors at home, and even expand upon them
- Ongoing support, information, exercises, and materials to ensure lasting results
It all begins with a free training evaluation, where you meet with a member of our training team to discuss your unique needs and goals. Every training program is fully customized and optimized for great results.

Dog Training Programs
Stay & Train is a popular and highly effective training program that takes place during a stay at our resort. Since your dog is here day and night, it gives us a chance to work with them repeatedly in a short period of time, honing their skills in a dynamic, comprehensive way. Here’s what’s included in Stay & Train:
- Private accommodations in a climate-controlled facility
- Daily play sessions, either in group or individually
- Multiple daily training sessions tailored to your pet’s unique program
- Daily wellness checks
- Take-home materials and exercises
- Ongoing phone support
What are the advantages of Stay & Train?
Here are some of the reasons this is our most popular training option:
- Ideal mix of play and learning. During their stay, your dog will enjoy playtimes every day in between training sessions. Like recess for human kids, this keeps dogs ready to focus on their learning and expends any built-up energy.
- Work with multiple trainers. During their program, your dog will work with multiple members of our training team. This helps them associate the desired behaviors with the cues given, rather than with the person giving it.
- Repetition is key. While training once a week can build skills, dogs learn best when training is given in consecutive intervals in a shorter time frame. This helps them make the associations needed to cement expectations in their minds and produce results that last.
- Dedicated training environment. We have an entire section of our facility dedicated to training, allowing us to control the amount of distractions your dog will encounter during their lessons. We introduce distractions like treats, other dogs, and people to help improve your dog’s focus and increase their ability to respond in real-world situations.
Other Dog Training Options
- Day Training. We will come to you and train your dog in the comfort of your own home while you work. The information and training skills are then transferred to you so you can continue training and improving your relationship with your dog! We require an evaluation visit, during which we will discuss current conditions, common problems, and expectations, before starting day training. Evaluations may be done at home or at our facility.
- Training Classes. We host group classes for a variety of purposes at our training facility. Call to see what’s next on the calendar.
- Sports Training. We’re equipped to train canine athletes in agility, dock diving, Fast CAT, and more.
- Therapy Dog Training. Looking for therapy dog training? We work with RocDog, a therapy dog training organization in Rochester, NY. Give us a call to learn more.
